However, when designers working on personal items, such as jewelry, handbags, jackets, gloves, and hats often ask us about our alternative hides such as lambskin leather and calf and pig suedes.

When creating a product that will be in frequent contact with the skin, such as a hand back or gloves, many of our clients prefer suedes, but the majority chooses lambskin leather hides. Lambskin leather is one of the supplest leathers available and it performs excellently on small items with minute contours, bends, and folds. According to Assomac, an association that represents Italian manufacturers in all aspects of the leather industry, says that in Italy alone there are approximately 6,200 workers in the field. In July of 2012, exports were $41.608 million. This year, the figures showed an $8 million decline in exports when measured against research from last year. The 20 percent decline has been tied to a smuggling problem. Livestock smuggling is listed as one of the major factors contributing to the decline in exports.

According to the Leather Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association, the smuggling of live animals has lowered the number of exports. The smuggling has impacted the prices of raw materials and has proven to be difficult to contain for authorities. Pakistan has seen prices double in one year as a result of this issue.

The smuggled animals are transported to places throughout the Middle East, including Afghanistan and Iran. Neighboring countries and NATO forces present in the region are partially responsible for the demand of the smuggled livestock.

The smuggling problem has some suggesting tougher regulations. Licensing is being considered as a potential avenue as it provides a means to better control unregulated export activity. Licensing also makes it easier for the country to meet the local consumer demand. If the problem is addressed through licensing, authorities can ensure that the local population has the ability to meet local food demands, which would make it easier to keep prices from spiraling out of control.

The smuggling also has some suggesting that additional law enforcement resources be devoted to stopping the activities. Another popular proposal involves establishing checkpoints situated throughout key entry points of the country to curb smuggling activity.
